About Gastroenterology
After college and medical school, a gastroenterologist receives three years of training in internal medicine and an additional three to four years of specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines (colon), liver, pancreas, and gall bladder. All of our physicians are board certified by the American Board of Gastroenterology.
A complete gastrointestinal evaluation involves an interview, physical examination, and specialized studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, and other imaging studies. Endoscopic procedures involve the passage of flexible lighted instruments to inspect the inside of the digestive tract. Endoscopic procedures may be used to remove polyps, dilate strictures, stop internal bleeding, or remove stones from the bile duct.
Our patients are usually referred by another provider for a specific evaluation or treatment. When completed, we will correspond with that provider, summarizing our findings and recommendations. We may assume care of a specific digestive problem, but we will usually refer you back to your provider for ongoing care. We see adult patients 18 years of age and older. All of our doctors are on the staff of Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, and St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center.
